THE CRIMINAL PROCEDURE (IDENTIFICATION) BILL, 2022
A BILL to authorise for taking measurements of convicts and other persons for the purposes of identification and investigation in criminal matters and to preserve records and for matters connected therewith and incidental thereto.
The Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill, 2022, was passed by the Lok Sabha on Monday, allowing investigating officers to acquire biometric information from convicts.
The bill proposes allowing police to take fingerprints, palm prints, footprints, pictures, iris and retina scans, as well as physical and biological samples. It also recommends the gathering of behavioural characteristics such as signatures, handwriting, or any other test referred to under CrPC Section 53 or 53A.
